1815 Damerum

This map image was cropped from a large 1815 wall map titled Map of the Southern part of the State of New York by William Damerum.  Carmans, at the center of the map, more commonly known as South Haven, was the center of the south Town of Brookhaven region -- all roads seem to lead to it.

To the east (left) is Mastic Neck (with the Forge River missing).  The three roads emanating from Carmans to the south and southeast lead to the three major estates there -- the Manor house of St. George along the river (not labeled), Dr. Roberts, and the various Floyd estates.  The road to the east is South Country Rd (Montauk Highway); the first habitation along it occurs at the Moriches.

To the west (right), more or less following the shoreline, is South Country Road, passing through the more habited communities of Fire Place, Bellport, Patchogue (not labeled) to Blue Point.

From Satatuck (Setauket) there is a road leading generally southeast through Coram down to near the bay.  This road is Old Town Rd., and it terminates at Beaver Dam Rd. on the east side of of Beaver Dam Creek (not shown).  Much of this road still remains, although segments of it take different names.  From Town records, it appears to have been the first major north-south highway constructed by the nascent Town, allowing access of the proprietors to their newly purchased lands on the south shore.
