Leslie A. Davis (1876-1960) was husband of
Catherine E. Carman (1884-1976), of the Brookhaven/South Haven Carman
family. Davis was a U. S. consul who served in many countries during his
career. Catherine and the family frequently joined Leslie in his
assignments. It is not clear, however, whether the family accompanied
him to the consulate at Harput [Elāzığ], Turkey. The
assignment to Harput was his second posting. This letter tells of his
trip to Harput and his early activities. While stationed at Harput, he became
involved in reporting and documenting the
Armenian massacres or genocide by the Turks that occurred from about
1915-1917, and on his return he wrote an
extensive report
for the U.S. State Department on his activities there. He first consulate had been at Baturn, Russia, on the Black
sea. His career took him to several European consulates, including Archangle in northern Russia, Finland, and as Consul General in Glasgow,
Scotland.
